Elena Stikhina
Russian Soprano A Portrait
Words by Paiman Maria Davarifard
Elena Stikhina: A Portrait of a Dramatic Soprano
There are voices that impress, and then there are voices that transform. Russian soprano Elena Stikhina belongs to the latter. Her presence on the operatic stage is not simply an act of performance, but one of deep, immersive storytelling. With each role, she inhabits not only the music but the soul of the character, crafting a space where art becomes emotion, and where sound becomes truth.
Elena Stikhina, born on December 25, 1986, in Lesnoy, Sverdlovsk Region, Russia, is a distinguished Russian operatic soprano renowned for her powerful and expressive voice. She graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory under Larisa Rudakova and further honed her skills at the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Singing Centre with Makvala Kasrashvili. Since 2014, she has been a soloist at the State Primorsky Opera and Ballet Theatre (now the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre).
Her breakthrough came with a sweep of international competition wins and her debut at the Mariinsky Theatre. From there, invitations followed: Teatro alla Scala, Opéra Bastille, the Royal Opera House, and the Bayreuth Festival. But what makes Elena's presence so compelling is not only her voice—though its clarity, warmth, and expansive range are unmistakable—it is the inner world she brings with her onto the stage. Her Salome burns with quiet defiance; her Tosca trembles with mortal longing; her Sieglinde sings with a timeless ache.
Stikhina's international career blossomed after her success at the 2016 Operalia competition, leading to engagements at prestigious opera houses worldwide. Her repertoire spans from Russian and Italian to French and German operas, showcasing her versatility and dramatic prowess.
Why Elena Stikhina Matters
What sets Elena apart is not just her voice—lush, expansive, and full of color—but her intelligence as an artist. She internalizes each character, transforming operatic archetypes into living, breathing women. Whether it’s Butterfly’s innocence, Tosca’s flame, or Aida’s sorrow, she approaches them with both technical masteryand a profound emotional instinct.
