The Transcendence of Self
Artist’s Statement

Editorial Introduction
In her art, Sezin Aksoy turns color into consciousness and painting into ritual. Born in Istanbul and based in London, she creates a dialogue between nature and spirit, healing and transformation. Her work moves between the physical and the transcendent — where feminine intuition becomes a form of knowledge and care, and art itself becomes an act of renewal.

The Transcendence of Self
SEZIN AKSOY
As a feminist artist, my work revolves around the themes of environment, identity, and spirituality. Born in Istanbul and based in London, I create as both a painter and performance artist. My works have been exhibited across Europe and the UK, and I recently attended the neo-feminist art residency Centre Pompadourin northern France, founded by Michaela Spiegel. The residency takes place in a grand château in Ercourt, near Abbeville, and has become a space for artistic sisterhood and reflection.
Nature and its healing properties have long been my greatest inspiration. I have been researching alternative healing methods, herbal knowledge, therapies, and self-care techniques that I integrate into my performance art. My practice draws on the imagery of ancient symbols, animal medicine, and the use of color as a form of therapy.
Through my art, I aim to encourage mindfulness, peace, and spiritual harmony. I am deeply interested in transpersonal knowledge — in how human beings can transcend the limits of the self and become more whole. In my artistic statement, I use “trans” as a central theme: transformation, transition, transcendence — all reflecting the impermanence of time, identity, and being. Recently, I have been exploring the delicate line between illusion and reality, questioning what is fluid and what is fixed within the self.
For me, self-care is a profound expression of feminine values. It represents the motherhood of self-love and self-respect. I feel strongly about sharing ancient healing knowledge through my art. My research has led me to explore different traditions — Reiki, sound therapy, color and light therapy — which influence both the form and intention of my work.
In my paintings, I begin with a blank, colored acrylic surface and later add figures in oil. This dialogue between materials represents my questioning of duality — between the artificial and the natural, the visible and the unseen. The blank colors recall the meditative mind, while the figures emerge like visions from the dream world. My hope is that the colors themselves serve as healing agents, awakening the viewer’s consciousness to the balance between illusion and reality.
The themes of oneness, strength, and rebirth run through my work. I see a deep connection between self and nature — what we create reflects who we are. The awareness of unity can dissolve the illusion of separation that often defines modern life. I believe that women hold a special power of intuition, nurturing, and healing — mirroring Mother Nature herself. We are embodiments of the Earth’s elements through our emotions and our presence. To love and respect our true nature is to reclaim that power.
Recently, my interest has turned to the figure of the witch — women who, in history, were punished or silenced for their knowledge of herbs and healing. I have been studying Green Witch practices, collecting herbs, stones, and pinecones to understand their symbolic and therapeutic meanings. Through this research, I want to question how modern society perceives alternative healing, mindfulness, and spiritual connection.
As an artist, I bring together references from science, psychology, and history to inspire reflection and reconnect people with ancient wisdom. My upcoming solo exhibition, Transesence of Self, will be on view from 13–23 March 2026at 67 York Street Gallery, London.
